On Paper is a column born from the idea of combining the aesthetic of zines with digital media. It features a series of light interviews with various figures and encourages them to share their opinions on anything they like. All the answers are written in the sheet that we provide the subjects, giving the interview a more personal touch, and scanned into this column.

From all the figures in this country’s visual arts and photography scene, two particular names have long caught our attention. The first is Argentina-born photographer Leandro Quintero and the second is Tokyo-based Indonesian photographer Deby Sucha. Apart from their individual characters and aesthetics, it is the simplicity and the ‘sense of being’ found in their photographs that captivated us and drew us in. If you have a chance to look at one of their works, you’ll understand why.

We decided to pick the brains of both Leandro and Deby for this edition of On Paper, to find out what’s in their heads and get to know them better. Both artists recently wrapped up their recent joint exhibition Convergent, which was held at Sunset Limited, Jakarta throughout March 2021. Without much thought, we made our way to their exhibition to conduct our short interview, where we asked them about a variety of things, ranging from random recommendations to insights on their work.

Deby Sucha

What’s the first thing you think about when you wake up?

If you have to take any photo right at the second after you wake up, what would you shoot and why?

What’s your typical day like?

If you weren’t a photographer, what else would you do?

Was photography your first love, or other things?

What inspires you to be a photographer?

What inspires you lately?

Who do you look up to, as a person?

What is a moment that changed your life?

Recommend us 3 things to take a listen, read, watch or anything:

If you can only take one photographer to take photos of your life, who would it be?

What advice would you give to the people around you?

Please doodle something that could represent what you think about yourself:
